Chicago South Sider, yes Hyde Park has been on my list.... Did you google that address to see a picture of the Croatian Friars building? When I searched it, I learned something eerie and dark about its location: apparently that Leopold and Loeb abduction/murder case started on that block! I think the story says in front of the now-Croatian Friar building is where they started their hunt for the victim.... can anyone else confirm this?

I know exactly where it is. Like I said, I used to live just a block or so away. The neighborhood is actually Kenwood though, not Hyde Park.

Chicago South Sider: I read in your posts that you were reared in Calumet Heights. Around 1970, I became friendly with a group of college friends who grew up in that area. They were graduates of Warren ES and Bowen HS.

At that time, Calumet Heights and Pill Hill were racially integrated. This group of friends were mostly Jewish, as that area had a large Jewish population. There was a synagogue located on Jefffery Blvd. and 91st St. (Cong. Rodef Sholom) The original location of Mel Markon's Deli was at that intersection, across the street from the synagogue. There was a Jewish Community Center (JCC) in the area, as well.

I learned from my friends that Pill Hill received its name due of the large number of doctors who resided there, because they were on the staff of nearby South Chicago Hospital.

Yes, that's pretty much the history of the neighborhood. I grew up on the block of 91st Place and East End. When I was growing up the area was no longer racially integrated. It was a neighborhood of black professionals.
