Wait… didn't they reverse the flow of the Chicago River so sewage would not run off into the lake?

Aligning the beaches against the natural flow tends to preserve the imported sand.
/\ /\ /\ exactly

If you look at Google Earth view of North Avenue beach, you'll see groynes grabbing / keeping the sediment (sand) from being carried away by longshore drift and prevailing winds.

You obviously have no idea about Lake Michigan. Currents move incredibly fast...there is absolutely no difference in water quality around the southern cone...it's like a giant swirling bathtub. The biggest pollutant is ecoli from wildlife in the National Park. The lake has not been as clean since the 19th century. The water on many days in the Dunes looks like it belongs in the Caribbean.

Some day Chicago will wake up and realize Indiana's beaches are the Chicago metro's greatest natural asset.
Are there beach towns or resorts near these beaches? Do hot people go to these?

There are beach towns, but Michigan is probably more popular than Indiana for Chicagoans looking to take a weekend trip.

It's all about the sunsets! You can head up to Door County's peninsula or the very similar feature in Traverse City and the spots that have west facing beaches are MUCH more desirable that those that face east. People like to get the "warm glow" ...

On a summer weekend there will be thousands of people (tens of?) in places like Miller Beach, Indiana Dunes State Park (the busiest) Kemil Beach/Beverly Shores and Michigan City has a huge beach culture and incredible sunsets as it faces to the Northwest. Even as far West as miller the sun sets over the Lake in the summer.

If you want serenity hike west from the State Park or east from Kemil a couple miles and you won't believe you are in the most beautiful corner of a ten million person metro....more or less by yourself. On many days I've hiked a full 4-5 miles along the beach without passing one other person...with Chicago's skyline shimmering over the water...

This sounds pretty great! Are there sections of this beach that are more beach town-like? Or even resort beach town-like?

Also, I found that there is actually one south-facing beach in Chicago on Northerly Island, but just for a tiny segment of it and on the south side so it's not looking out towards the skyline. This is pretty unique though.

Miller Beach, where I live definitely has a beach town vibe in the summer. And good news for ca-free city dwellers, I heard that by next summer there will be a sguttle service from Miller Station to the beaches. Miller Beach is six miles long and is composed Lake Street Beach, Wells Street Beach, West Beach...but it's one contiguous beach. And the old downtown Lake Street is becoming a mini-destination in its own right, galleries, boutiques, award winning brewery and just a few weeks ago a heath food/smoothie shop opened.

There are no hotels but plenty of airbnb's...VRBO's....Don't be surprised in a few years when you start hearing about "heading out to Miller" for the weekend.
