I use a lot of taxis on the north side, and I've been paying almost exclusively with a credit card since the taxis now all have the machines, and it has been going fine. The drivers used to complain but they don't anymore. Last night I ran across a taxi whose machine charged a 50 cent fee for using a credit card. I have not run across this before and was wondering how common this is.

Have never seen that in Chicago. Did it specifically say it was a credit card fee? If so, seems like it was BS if it was a city cab.

Yes, the credit card machine specifically identified it as a credit card fee on top of the regular cab fare.

That's likely illegal and also likely a violation of their contract with the credit card companies. What I would do is either deduct it from their tip or not tip at all.

This just happened to me the other day as well. I was in a hurry so didn't bother to argue, but it was Checker Taxi Chicago.

It popped up on the screen when I went to pay, and it shows up on the receipt they gave me. I made sure to get a copy of it as well to have when calling 311.

I didn't get around to calling 311, but this might be an actual thing now. I took a cab last night and another one today, and it was the same thing. They were all different companies too.

It's a thing; as of Jan 1st, at least according to the two cabbies I asked.

It's not the cabbies or the city. There was a class action lawsuit by the credit card companies and they're now allowed to charge credit card surcharges. Some states are banning them (again) but Illinois hasn't yet.
