Hello,

I potentially have a graduate assistantship at UIC, but the work is located at 4314 S. Cottage Grove. I'm new to Chicago, though I've visited about 5-6 times, and have now lived here for just a month. I live in the loop area, so I would need to take the #4 bus from Michigan & Congress to my job. Is this route safe? I would need to go down at about 9am, and then leave at about 2pm, M-Th. So I'm just wanting to get an updated view on how safe this route is, and if there are any good alternatives.

Thanks

There is rarely gang bangers that hang out at public libraries, especially from 9AM -2PM...

Not much to worry about. In fact, there is a decent BBQ place across the street that has been on Check Please -- WTTW tends not to recommend places that are known for violence too frequently -- Watch Full Episodes Online of Check Please! on PBS | Honey 1 BBQ | WTTW Season 06

You will likely be working in the day time. I worked in that area for many years. Actually, I worked on 43rd and lake park which is a few blocks east, but I'm very familiar. I wouldn't worry at all about taking the #4 bus down cottage grove.

I actually used to live near 83rd and cottage grove, and I rode my bike 5 days a week north up cottage grove to 43rd and lake park.

I rode through a much worse part of the city. You'll be going through a much nicer part. you will be fine.

Considering it's on a CTA bus and every CTA bus is equipped with cameras...

I've been to 43rd and Cottage Grover before, I was trying to check out the sewer on that building right on the southwest intersection.
