I've been to the French Market on Ogilvie but I am talking standalone French bakeries. Unfortunately, I think you could have the best French baker in Chicago and they could not replicate a great French baguette. It's in the local French wheat (the way it's milled) and *especially* the water.

Sorry, did not mean to hijack the thread from the OP. I'm not aware of any French neighborhoods - at all -- in Chicago. I think they assimilate and frankly (Francly), I don't there are that many French expats in Chicago.

Chef Vincent Colombet was supposed to re-open his French bakery La Boulangerie (formerly located in Logan Square) next to the Lycee Francais School in December. Not sure what the status of that is. I was bummed when the LS location closed down. His baguettes were awesome, and the other offerings were great too. Looks like he's operating the bakery as a food truck for now.
I took a really cool cooking class with him once. Very cool guy.

My grandmother is Québécois and as far as I know there aren't any French Canadian neighborhoods in Chicago, at least she never mentioned being aware of any. Her parents settled in Hammond, IN. I know some extended family did end up in Illinois, but not in Chicago. They were very quick to assimilate, anglicizing the surname of "Boutilier" to "Butler" in the first generation.

The main area of French Canadian settlement in Illinois was in the Kankakee-Bourbonnais region. I've met people from that area with French Canadian names who said their grandparents actually spoke French. So this was only maybe 100 years ago that there were still at least some French-speaking people in that area.
Yes, some of my distant relatives settled there and also in and around Earl Park, IN which isn't too far from Kankakee.
