Is there been any case studies of how White people got poor, when reverse gentrification?

Back in the '50s when Englewood, Garfield Park, etc., were all White neighborhoods and they all moved out when they became Black neighborhoods. And lots of houses foreclosed.

Could I take a minute of your time to talk about our lord and savior Queens?

I don't want to start a race-baiting thread but if there were lots of poor white people, as there were 100 years ago, there would be poor white neighborhoods.

There still are lots of poor white people... but they tend to live more in rural areas these days.

I could never understand how poor white people ( or people of any ethnic background) can afford to live in rural areas. In most rural areas you have to own a vehicle and drive everywhere. The cost of owning a vehicle and driving can be pretty high-think monthly car payments, insurance, gas ,maintaining, repairs . high renewal fees of tags and driver's license etc. and in many if not most cases there are two or more vehicles needed for
one single family. I don't drive but my husband does ( we live in a working class to middle class semi urban neighborhood but he can't reach his workplace by mass transit) and the costs of him having to drive can make a dent in in our wallets each month and we are in the lower end of middle class.

True, although that seems to be a tendency that is more predominant east of the Mississippi. There are lots of other cities out there that have poor neighborhoods that are majority white...Chicago and most of the other midwest cities just aren't one of them.

The car expense is a big one, but usually other cost of living components are lower in rural areas, especially housing. You may need to have a car out in the boonies, but your rent is usually several hundred less than it would be in most cities.

Cars are cheaper and more reliable than they've ever been before. So is gasoline. So I think a lot of poorer people can still easily afford to live in more rural or sprawl areas, especially when the lower cost of living is taken into account.

Real estate would be literally dirt cheap, and a car, even an old one, might be the only "extravagance" that such a family would own..
