I agree with you. I was just saying he did say he was looking to live in the city specifically. I don't think a commute of one hour or 1 hour and a quarter is bad but I also grew up 20minutes outside of Manhattan and I'm used to a live to work mentality.

When I first moved to Chicago I was commuting every morning from Uptown to Gurnee via car and I didn't think it was bad other than the amount of miles being out on the car. But the 1hour morning and the 1 1/2 ride home didn't faze me at all.

I would suggest Lemont. It's just up the river from Joliet and has its own downtown. Although the social life will be far duller than in the city, a city social life is pretty much out of reach for someone working in Joliet. Best to prioritize, and frankly a hip neighborhood matters less and less as you get older, if it even matters much when you're young. A good commute is far more important.

Exactly. Chicago city people need to open their minds already and embrace all of northern Illinois. Apparently a lot of Chicagoans didn't get the memo that it's not 1955 anymore. People in Houston embrace East Texas, people in Los Angeles embrace So Cal... Heck, even people in Milwaukee don't use terms like "city" or "suburbs" to define people. A good job is not something one should easily throw out, and some entire industries (like Engineering, for example) are almost solely located in suburban areas.
