You can take the train from O'Hare to downtown for about $5. I used to do it all the time... kind of an interesting scenic ride too. It's safe.

Bump... with a new question.. In terms of travel to Wrigley Field, how is the Red Line? Is it safe/convenient? We're staying near the Mag Mile area but near a Red Line stop. Thanks for the help.

Anywhere the average tourist is likely to go is safe and so is the transportation to get there. You sound awfully worried about safety, maybe you should visit a small town.

Can't blame an outsider for being concerned about safety in Chicago considering the media portrayal of ChIraq, etc. Outsiders don't realize it's all occurring in gang infested areas on the South/West side.

The Red Line subway is only 2-3 blocks west of Michigan Ave (or at least it feels that close) and will take you to Wrigleyville, Milennium Park, and the heart of River North. That should hit most of the tourist attractions. If you want to go to Navy Pier, most tourists seem to walk along Grand Ave to the Pier. It's always a steady stream - you can't miss it!

Already have my trip booked, so thanks for the offer but I'm still going to Chicago and will be enjoying Mag Mile + surrounding areas!

Appreciate the comment. Yes, the media coverage/word of mouth from people has definitely impacted my thinking on certain things. It should be good though. Having lived and worked in NYC, big cities aren't a fear. This is my first time so I'm simply trying to be cautious in unfamiliar territory, yet having a great experience.

UPDATE: The trip was awesome. A clean, friendly city that was easy to navigate; plenty of things to do. My hotel was a few blocks from Michigan Ave, and not too far from the Red Line (which was very clean, and moved quickly). Between the boat tour, Cubs game, Millenium + Lincoln Park and Mag Mile, it was an incredible experience. Certainly, things to an extent are overblown about the safety. Yes, I have come to learn that the South Side and some suburbs west of the city are sketchy, but the heart of the city itself is great. I will be back again soon hopefully!
