Hi all,

So I'm visiting Chicago at the end of the month for three nights; I'll be staying along the Magnificient Mile area, and was curious of the best way to get around. How is the train system in Chicago? What's it like in comparison to NYC subway? Is it better to take a cab around town? For example, I'll be catching a game at Wrigley Field, attend a jazz club and a few other events. But I just wasn't sure of the best transportation outlet in the city.

Appreciate the feedback. Cheers.

Train system is very good in Chicago. A combo of Train/Uber will get you everywhere you need to go...

Clickable CTA System Map

CTA: Getting to Chicago Sports by Bus and Train

There's also Metra and South Shore, but that's for getting to/from the burbs.

I would go with a combination of CTA (trains) and Uber. Depending on how much you're using the train you can either buy a day pass or you can just get 1-way passes. Depending on where you are on the Mag Mile, you're not really close to the train, but there are plenty of cabs in that area so that can be an alternative to Uber. You can take the train directly to Wrigley Field.

In the areas you're staying/visiting I'd definitely go with a combination of the CTA (Subway/Bus System) and Uber. Taking a cab around everywhere is not necessary.

The train system in Chicago is very similar to NYC, just has less lines.

Don't leave out buses. You can travel up and down the Mag mile in a bus if you get tired of walking. You can take a bus to the Art Institute. Sometimes a bus is more appropriate than the L or subway.

If you have a smartphone, just use google maps. From there, judge whether you want to walk, take a bus, take the L or get an uber/taxi. It's pretty straightforward.

PT and Uber will work well. The PT is not remotely comparable to that of NYC, but it will get the job done, usually.

Where you're staying, the train line will be a few blocks to your west. There is no train line directly servicing the Mag Mile corridor. You can use buses if you want to use PT directly around your hotel. Usually buses work better than trains close to the lake (as the train line is a ways inland north of Loop).

Thank you all for your feedback. All of the suggestions are much appreciated. Are taxis from O'Hare flat rate charges, or do they charge by time/miles.. Might it be easier to order car services?
