I recently posted several ads to find a room in Chicago, and since I had not done that in many many years, I completely forgot how many people are would-be grifters. I have encountered everything from too-good-to-be-true deals from people who moved out of Chicago but still want me to drive by the apartment and take a look at it, to too-good-to-be-true deals from people who live overseas and just want someone to take care of their place, which just happens to be in a phenomenal location and includes all utilities for a price that is well below market rates.
Seems like 99.9 % of the responses I get are from that or from spambots who want me to click on a link and register for some roommate.com BS or something like that.
Has anyone experienced these things while looking for a place to rent in Chicago?
What would you guys and gals recommend to totally avoid being taken for a ride in regards to a rental?
What has been the most outrageous rental scam you've ever heard of?

It seems to me that common sense should prevail here. I think you can generally tell is something is a scam. There are legitimate apartment rental companies that operate here, there are property management companies, and there are individual apartment owners like myself who rent out apartments or flats. I used hotpads to place my ad when I wanted to rent out my flat. My son has used craigslist to find apartments with success. You have to be aware that there could be scammers on any of these. Its a waste of time to think of the biggest scam if you are serious about finding a place. I think its always dicey if you are looking for only a room and you end up living with someone you don't know. Mostly when my son had room mates he knew them or they were a friend of a friend.
