Hi!

My family is looking at a short term rental across from Eckhart Park (corner of Noble and Chicago). Is there anything we should worry about in that neighborhood? We have two small kids and I would be by myself for a lot of the time while my husband is attending a class. It is the only option in our price range and want to make sure there isn't a reason behind that. In looking at the Police Department website for crime statistics, it's in the high range for index crime, so we're a bit concerned.

Any information would be great. We'd like to feel safe while we're there and with all the recent media about the crime in Chicago, we're a little concerned. We understand some crime will happen anywhere, we just don't want to put our family in a spot that is prone to more significant crime.

Thanks for any help!

I think it is nice enough. That area has been improving the last number of years.

Nothing to worry about.

I think there is some government subsidized housing in the area and there are the extreme, extreme remnants of gang bangers when the area was rough like 25 years ago, but it's pretty yuppified these days.

You're going to be just fine. I ride the blue line to the ogden/milwaukee/chicago intersection and catch the 66 bus (chicago ave) both east and west. Over the past year, there has been a huge construction boom with a ton of wealth moving in. As a bonus, you'll be close to one of my favorite western wear boutiques, Alcala's.

the subsidized housing is on noble just south of chicago avenue. despite this, I'd have no concerns living in that area.

I think I once applied and toured the building in 2009, I think it has a high Eastern European population.

Can you elaborate on this?

I just moved from this area because it is too expensive. I would qualify that by saying it's too expensive for what it offers a single person. But still, it ain't cheap, unless there's something I'm missing here.

It's pretty safe, to answer your question. I walked around at all hours of the night there and never felt uncomfortable. A couple of the streets south of Chicago Ave. (Ada and Throop, I think) are nasty-looking, but even those streets have become much safer in the last five years or so.

I lived on Walton and Noble for a year in 2004. That area was well on it's way with gentrification back then and was perfectly safe. I can only imagine it's gotten even safer (and more expensive) since then.

Yeah I figured that was it but wasn't 100% so didn't want to say.

South of Chicago Avenue has isolated robberies and shootings. Not as bad as it used to be, but there's still a ghetto presence that would be more normal in North Lawndale. Source: I lived there and still have friends there.
