Hi All,

I am in the process of looking for apartments and will be in the city next week to find a lease and sign. I am curious - how do people go about this process? It seems like the vast amount of apartments I've seen and reached out about are gone within a short time. How do people go about finding apartments in the city? I have heard about the apartment search company, but people have said it's not really worth it. How would I go about finding more smaller management companies or private owners? This entire process has been a headache and I would love ANY and ALL advice on how to proceed! Thanks all!

Chicago.Craigslist.org.

When you do apartment search, whether apartments or roommates, you can type in a value for the "minimum price" and "maximum price."

However, what really pisses me off, some places that are by the week, put in weekly prices. Which ****s everything up. When you see something like 250, and you think it's by the month, oh, it's by the week. But ~95% of these listings are by the month.

Given that you're doing this from out of town, I'd say go ahead and use an apartment search company if that seems easier. Just don't use one if they require a fee -- typically landlords pay those companies' fees, and the service is free to the prospective tenant. I found my first Chicago apartment that way when I was relocating. It's hard looking on your own when you live in a remote location and have a limited amount of time in the city to spend looking for an apartment. In fact, it can be overwhelming if you're not very familiar with the city.

I've used Craigslist to find all of my apartments, and we have always signed on the spot to secure the apartment we wanted. Come prepared with your checkbook would be my suggestion.
