Wow, it's that close? How long would you say would take on foot? Being from south where you can't get around anywhere without a car, it's amazing for me to know I can actually walk to work!

Sorry for confusion- I meant the walk from the red line that's longer than the bus. You could walk depending where on wacker, but it'd be about 1.5-2 miles. Doable, certainly, if you're in to that sort of thing.

I read once people walk on average 3 miles an hour, so if that's true it should only take you 30-45 minutes...

Honestly, I'm sure the bus will be your best bet. Nice and easy commute.

It's a very entertaining and lively walk, and would probably take a half an hour. I walk up up to Diversey sometimes and it's very relaxing and fun people watching. That's about 3.5 miles.

It's a safe area, lots of buses, the red line is a great asset to have. As far as Cabrini - don't worry. It's far enough away, and honestly it's in it's death throngs right now. There's just a handful of buildings left waiting to be town down, and there are hundreds of new townhomes with happy people who live MUCH closer than you will....it's a FAR cry from the Cabrini of 20 years ago.

Oh I see! Yeah, walking from red line to work on a freezing winter day certainly won't be fun! :P I will definitely look into buses that would take me down there. Thanks aragx6!

Thank you Chicago60614! Sounds great - on warm days, I will definitely try the walk to work thing, if that is I'm not in a rush But being a woman, I guess I will still try to be cautious during at nights.

Thanks!

Thanks so much to those who have replied so far!

I do have one more question. I understand red line runs 24hrs/day. If I ever have to ride a red line at night alone, when would you say is the cut-off point for being safe?

As long as you are not drunk and stay in relatively safe areas, I think you're fine pretty much all night. If you're uncomfortable though it's always better to take a cab.

That's good to hear, aragx6! I was on NYC subway once late at night and I felt pretty safe though I was by myself. I was wondering whether or not that was the case for Chicago trains, too! And I assume it's very easy to hail cabs in Chicago just like in NYC?

Taxis aren't around nearly as much as Manhattan, but in the neighborhood you'll be living in there will be plenty.
