Uh...Best airport that isn't Midway?

In all seriousness, your question makes me think you have a short layover at O'Hare and/or decided to stay near there overnight because hotels are so much cheaper than they are downtown. That area is really only part of the city on a technicality, though. (O'Hare was annexed by the city and is only connected to the rest of the city by a long strip of concrete.) It is surrounded by suburbs and is very suburban in feel. That's not really Chicago.

Chet's mentions on the NW side are all solid (and there are many others), but your use of the "far" specifier makes me assume you are talking about O'Hare or the 'burbs rather than just the NW side in general.

The Irish American Heritage center may be worth checking out if one has an interest in or is of irish heritage.

When in Chicago, you can't be more North West in the actual CITY of Chicago than Edison Park. Check out N. Northwest Highway. Several restaurants, especially Italian! They all have their own flavor and feel. It is also a very safe part of the city. I come in from Milwaukee, and always feel welcome!

Try the Illinois Holocaust Museum too! My girlfriend says it was better than the one in Washington D.C. I have only ever been the one in DC but would love to check it out myself.

Also, go to Zia's Trattoria. Fantastic Pasta dishes and a great brunch too!
