If you had read the next sentence of my post, I mentioned minor crimes that don't require custody like jaywalking, traffic violations, etc. Anything more major and ICE definitely gets contacted, even from sanctuary jurisdictions.

This whole "sanctuary" thing is over-blown just because of the emotions behind it and the right vs. left, urban vs. rural political battles that have ratcheted up over the years. Many cities have been sanctuary cities for decades but barely a peep has been made until recently. It really comes down to allocating resources and not locking people up in a local jail for a misdemeanor crime (which is what immigration violations are), waiting for ICE to do their investigation. And not having local police forces wasting time on investigating immigration status for traffic violations.

If Trump wants to deport all undocumented immigrants, he should hire a bunch of immigration officers and lawyers and judges, instead of picking battles with cities and states which he needs to help him look good by being his eyes and ears on anti-terrorism measures.

My family, and lots of other families separated by water all came in legally. My family (from Iraq) we had to wait 12 years before we came to America and we did it all legally, paperwork, and all of those visits to the embassy. It's not fair that people can walk over the border and get away with it. Worst of all, people thinking it is okay. Do you know how hard your ancestors worked to try and get here and create a good family foundation for you all?

Nobody (at least not that I see in this thread) is arguing for open borders, but there are punishments to every crime where the lawbreaker has a chance to repay society and start fresh with a clean slate. Should the only punishment to immigration violation be immediate deportation, rather than paying back taxes and other fines in exchange for some sort of permanent resident status? That's a completely separate topic.

I just don't think CPD should make immigration crimes a top priority. Focus on the big stuff...violent crimes, property crimes, etc. There's plenty of that going on to take up all of CPD's resources. And if the Feds want to swoop in and round up the undocumented, nobody is actively stopping them. As we saw under Obama and now continuing under Trump.

Categorically, no. Paying back taxes may make you whole taxwise but doesn't account for any public assistance or subsidies. And if you think paying a fine makes it ok you should realize that you can't just buy your way into the US with a few hundred bucks that wouldn't even cover a green card application fee. You can buy your way in if you have 500K though, which is a way to get investment into the US.

But before you go on about how immigration shouldn't just be for the rich, also understand that the US has refugee programs and a green card lottery for every under-represented country where any joe (or sven or mohamed) off the street can get full residence here. The point is they have to get in line like everybody else.

If you jump the line, sneak across, lie your way in and over-stay, you do not in any way deserve a pardon or free pass. You deserve to go back home and wait in line like everybody else

Actually, the Fed cannot force our city to enforce immigration laws. I'm totally cool with it if Chicago says they're not going to be an extension of ICE.

However, I have some trouble with the rhetoric and even actions (like the $1 million defense fund) of City Council and Rahm to actively interfere with federal law enforcement efforts. It isn't a municipality's place to do that, and it could risk our federal funding, which we can't afford to lose and which would disproportionately impact our most vulnerable citizens, who depend more on federally funded programs.

Except for very minor ticket-able offenses, if illegal aliens are committing crimes and causing trouble they need to go on a bus/boat/plane out of here. Protecting them is asinine and contrary to the duties of an elected official and they should be thrown in jail for obstruction of justice and interfering in a federal investigation.
