What is your take on the current economy (jobs, housing, etc.) in the Chicagoland area? What about your future projections?

Current economy is not great and the situation with the dysfunctional govt is going to continue to be a drag on economic growth for the entire state particularly for smaller businesses.

If you're in professional services or in the trades for commercial construction you're probably doing pretty well. Outside of that things get less awesome.

Yeah. If you're educated or possess a high-demand skill, things are going pretty well. If not...

Seems fine to me. New homes are being built in the Western burbs and there are plenty of high paying IT jobs.

In spite of the dysfunctional government, the economy is good.

Doing just fine. Highish wages in general and lowish unemployment. Good place to be a skilled worker or a creative not in film or fashion.

Strong at the top, declines rapidly from there. That needs to change.

Default Lots of people are either blind to problems or worse...

There are huge problems in sectors that have been vital to the regional economy for decades.

Tremendous surplus of office space is getting worse and that means folks that might have had good jobs in nice office settings in towns along the massive Tollway system are not working to support that infrastructure.

Similarly the collapsing retail market is a domino effect as the whole chain of jobs that cascade from clerks to managers and delivery/ logistics providers to executives in firms are eliminated.

The shift toward locations like the West Loop is also an occasion for MASSIVE reeducation in workforce and shrinking wage base.

While more attractive states are seeing huge new explosions of everything from giant office campuses and massive data centers Illinois continues to see horrendous out-migration.

True there is out migration. And really horrendous problems with our state government and debt. But the jobs picture is not that bleak and better for the skilled and educated. Also lots of low paying fast food jobs and some retail. Retail is collapsing all over the country not just here. That's not a Chicago thing. I just read about a big data center being built in Franklin Park. Lots of IT jobs. Of course we will never be silicon valley. The blue collar factory jobs have disappeared and won't be back in large numbers. Higher wages in Chicago, higher cost of living and taxes too.
