I am accepting a job in Elk Grove village, want to live in Chicago.Family of 3, one car, plan to drive to Elk Grove village, wife and son to use CTA throughout Chicago most days. Trying to keep commutes under an hour. We like Lincoln square, Edgewater, etc. Any suggestions for people who have made similar commutes?

Default Not the worst commute...

Elk Grove Village spreads out quite a bit -- south east border to northwest corner is significant. That said, most work locations are due west of ORD and as such the commute from Lincoln Square via either the Kennedy or surface streets is well under an hour barring true "weather disasters".

Edgewater would add significantly to this commute, and though it is more affordable it is not as pleasant a neighborhood.

You would be better off looking at neighborhoods such as Edgebrook, Norwood Park, Jefferson Park, or Edison Park. If you get closer to Devon Ave, it could be an alternative route you could try to take if the xpress way is jammed up. These areas are safer than areas farther east in the city and more convenient to the location you work.

Don't want to live as far out of the city as eddison, Jefferson, etc. So Lincoln square and Logan square, am I looking at an hr commute or less? Best routes?

Along the blue line is best. Take the L to Rosemont, the 223 bus. A well used route that runs until late at night. I know, everyone advises against using Pace and CTA, but in this case it should work. Edge water would be a pain, very hard to go west from there.

Default The "plus" from Lincoln Square is simple...

Many work locations in EGV are pretty much a straight shot down Irving Park Rd, its only about 15 miles and except during "snow-magedon" weather episodes speeds on the Kennedy won't drop below about 30 mph avg. -- if they do you can use Irving Park Rd or Higgins as alternate.

EGV is not well served by transit, it is very car-centric, trying to use CTA & Pace would make a 30 minute trip take 3x longer...
