I travelled around Palatine and Arlington Heights as I did some business with Harper College. I noticed a majority of white anglo-saxons. What are those two suburbs like in terms of open mentality, tolerance, acceptance of diversity, etc.?

I don't know what other people have experienced, but I lived (and worked) in Arlington Hts., Palatine, and Elk Grove Village for a total of 15 yrs. (just moved to the Plainfield area) and as a person of color I never had a problem. In fact I loved it, and was very skeptical about leaving.

Default To the OP...

If you haven't already moved... I would HIGHLY URGE you to consider the Bridgeport/Bronzeville area. We (as an interracial/intercultural couple) moved here a year ago. Granted, neither of are A-A...but we definitely are happy to see many near our house basically around the corner of 35th and Halsted. As new residents, I now know some of the turbulent racist history involved in this neighborhood. However, I can tell you that open-minded people like us, who want our children to grow up in/knowing diversity, are moving into the neighborhood. I agree with Drover (there's a shock - HA! ), maybe you could be a "pioneer"...we will welcome you with open arms. Otherwise, I think (as other posters suggested) Bronzeville could be a wonderful area (we are actually considering looking to buy there).
Good luck, and let us know what happens!
Cheers,
-TM

If you want what you had in Hyde Park, then go to Hyde Park. Why oh why do you want to go to the SUB-urbs?! Seriously, it makes no sense.
