As a kid I used to love going to Navy Pier. Absolutely loved it. Indoor and outdoor stuff to do there with the rides and carnival deal outside and the IMAX and children's museum inside.

I'd second Navy Pier and the zoo's (Brookfield and Lincoln Park). The skydecks at Sears Tower and John Hancock were always exciting to me as a kid. Beaches including the Indiana/Michigan Dunes.

The Dells are boring. We went there once, never again.
We take our kids to the Art Institute, Oriental Institute, Field Museum, Adler, MSI, Shedd every winter. They enjoy them all.
In the summer, we go the beach, bike along the various paths throughout the city, sail, Millenium Park, Maggie Daley, local festivals, kayak in the river etc.
