No one can be surprised that, given estimates showed loss of population in Illinois and Chicagoland as a whole, that the largest population center in IL and Chicagoland would have an estimated population decrease.

The "top line" numbers are staggering --
Quote:
Chicago's population plunge continues to be a result, mostly, of losing residents to other states. About 89,547 residents left Chicago and its surrounding suburbs for other states in 2016, a number that couldn't be offset by new residents and births, according to an analysis of census data released in March. The number of people leaving the Chicago region is the highest since at least 1990.

The net numbers are just as sobering; despite significant births and in-bound migration, the declines that are happening across the board means its no longer possible for Chicago's eternal boosters to wave their hands and dismiss this as some odd blip.

The City net loss of 8,638 residents, nearly double the loss in the prior year of 4,934 represents THOUSANDS of households. The areas where folks have moved out mean more business closings, less employment and more attraction of crime The Chicago Metro, which includes the suburbs, declined by 19,570. The whole state of Illinois shrunk by 37,508. Unless things change dramatically over the next three years, and there is no sign that will happen, Illinois will likely lose another Congressional district. That ought to be an alarm bell to the politicians...

Here is a great idea, increase taxes. I'm sure that will bring more residents to this state.

Absolutely awful...

Did you people even read the article? The city continues to bleed blacks but has added whites, Asians, and Latinos. Educational attainment and incomes are up year after year. It's unfortunate news, but its not because of taxes. It's because these people don't have jobs and are the victims of decades long discrimination. There are more than 1,000,000 blacks who were born in the NE that are now living in the south. The reversal of the great migration is real and we happen to be on the losing side this time.

Yeah, paying our bills is an awful idea.

Some of the posters in this thread, and other similar ones, are completely ignorant to the facts you have posted. They are so hyper-focused on taxes that they miss the whole picture.

Increasing taxes isn't paying the bills though. If it was, we wouldn't be in this mess to begin with. Illinois has gotten more than its fair share of taxes from it's residents in the past and somehow they have still mismanaged everything and we have billions worth of debt. So, how is raising the taxes going to help?
