I think a simple way to measure why our city is not world class is to measure the amount of famous people that live in our city. Hardly any famous people live in Chicago other than athletes and local news.

I think that the amount of famous people that live in the city can effect the energy when you go to new York or los angelas you are going somewhere that the rich and famous choose to live for some reason. That energy is missing from Chicago. Its there for three months in the summer but only us locals know how to find it and where to look. Anyone coming here cannot seek it in brief stay in Chicago. We are a world class architecture city and food city, but its not enough.

In the winter I wonder if living in Chicago is what it feels like to live in Russia I feel we are an isolated city far away from the energy of the ocean, I feel chicago will never be a world class city. We are only going down we use to have the worlds tallest tower, the busiest mc donalds, the busiest airport.

Who wants to go do a beach with bathrooms that are caked in urine? Who wants to dodge bullets? Not famous people.

I believe the amount of famous people living in a city is a huge gage for measuring its status as a world class city.

A better gauge would be strong job growth, a diversified economy which provides broad-based opportunity, and tourism. Not on whether or not some overhyped celebrities decide on a whim to live here and annoint us cool with their star- studded presence.

Besides, those celebrities would move to our rich neighborhoods and suburbs. Those areas need no help. Our affluent areas are kicking butt. Our poor areas are in absolute misery.

Put another way, we need more factories and less Eddie Vedder!

Celebrities as a critieria for being a world class city? Give me a break. The only cities that have celebrities living in them on a large scale are NYC and LA and that is for OBVIOUS reasons. Most celebrities that are living in NYC and LA are living there because that is where the industry is, not because they have an overwhelming desire to live in them.

The biggest tragedy of the 2016 World Series was it went 7 games and we got to see the faces of John Cusack, Eddie Vedder and Bill Murray that many more times. The last thing we need around here are more insulated elites! We have plenty of that among non-celebrities in our rich neighborhoods already.

This is seriously the silliest thing I have ever heard. I would have to be dead to possibly care less if famous people live in Chicago. Who the hell cares, what does that have to do with your life or the quality of the city?
None!

Oh, brother.... you must have never been to NYC . Or even SF? With more situations with finding urine. LOL

Did YOU actually dodge bullets in Chicago in any areas famous people would be? Anywhere in the Core?

OMG to reference Russia and the OCEAN, and term CHICAGO ISOLATED from the ocean? Do you realize HOW FAR ARE RUSSIA'S LARGEST CITIES ARE FROM THE OCEAN? How FRIGID NORTH AND EAST OCEANFRONT IN Russia it is MOSTLY ARTIC? They use the Black sea for their oceanfront actually as it has a more moderate weather for resorts.

Chicago has a few TV shows filmed there. Not just the Chicago Fire. MD franchisees. In THIS REASONING OF HAVING LIVE-IN FAMOUS PEOPLE? That says ONLY LA and NYC are then World-Class in the US. Some merely making a secondary homes in cities they find work in.

Some do include Sports stars and regular TV show actors? As Famous people too.

You think London and Paris has anything close to Chicago's Lakefront? Try getting a outside tan in them cities too...... they are known for cloudiness.

Yes, *rich* and famous. These two things are not mutually exclusive. Chicago is one of the wealthiest cities in the world. Plenty of rich, inventive, entrepreneurial people come to this city with their ideas.

Another thing to consider - just because *you* haven't heard of some of the people doesn't mean they aren't famous in their industries or in their circles of expertise. Would you even know the names of the five most famous working physicists? Five most famous futures traders? Five most famous working economists?

Common fame is for common people. There's nothing wrong with common people, per se, but they are not the arbiteurs of greatness.

Point of fact: Without resorting to Google, name five famous people who live in Paris and five from Tokyo. Can you? What does that mean if you can't? That Paris and Tokyo aren't world class cities? No, it just means you don't know everything. Case closed.
