On a side note.. What's the female version of bud?
"We're buddies" kinda works for women. But if a woman holds a door for me I'm not gonna say "Thanks, bud." Just 'thanks' I guess.
You just answered your own question: "pal" works just fine.

On the other hand, when Jerry referred to Elaine as his "pal", after they took "this" [move hands back and forth] and added "that" [gesture toward the bedroom], she got upset. So it's not a universal term.

"Dude' and "bro" are not dated, they're quite new, although being a middle-aged guy I don't use them. "Man" goes back quite a few years...

What qualifies as dated? They have to explain what it means to small town square Jack Nicholson in the movie 'Easy Rider'. That's before my time. I'm 41.

Is 'groovy' dated?

eureka1, I am a 44-year-old Social Worker and Tae Kwon Do instructor

So, it appears there was a mixture of responses to my original post, and I do appreciate the feedback. I would have to assess that it does seem, based on these responses, that "bud" does not appear to be as offensive in the Chicago-area, as my acquaintance had indicated (although the waiter to some degree confirmed her statement.

I have always used the term with meant respect, and see no reason why I would have to be concerned. So to all my friends, buds, amigos, etc on city-data, I wish you a great week ahead! Jay
