This is a rip-off of a thread I saw on the NYC forum, but I figured that imitation was the greatest form of flattery so I stole the title and switched "Chicago" for "New York".

Anyway, this one is a great idea.

So what buffets are out still there.....city, suburbs, and the hinterland of IL, IN, Wi, & MI beyond. How much do they cost, how's the quality, and what is the mix of food like?

There are Indian buffets that are pretty good and reasonable.

There are some Golden Corral restaurants in the suburbs.

There's an Old Country Buffet near the city limits (Lincoln Avenue near McCormick Boulevard) -- if it's still there.

I went there from time to time over a period of several years... but price kept going up even as quality/variety kept going down.

One of the cashiers always gave me the senior discount, though... even though I wasn't a senior.

Red Apple buffet, various Indian have lunch buffets. I went to Red Apple a couple of years ago. It was okay I generally don't like buffets but would rather order a plate lunch. It has some Polish food, pierogis and the like. I think there is also Sawa's Old Warsaw on Cermak Rd in the burbs.

I've never been personally, but I recall that some of the Korean restaurants on Lincoln Avenue (near Foster Avenue) advertised that they had buffets. Can't recall specific names, though.

The old country buffet in Lincoln wood closed more than year ago and they were not good anymore anyway. I remember when I was kid old country seemed good the had huge beef ribs. The first time we ever want to old country buffet was wac a mall pottery near Arlington hieghts. There are two good polish buffets jolly in on Irving and red apple but red apple is pricey 20 bucks for dinner

Chicago never struck me as a buffet restaurant kind of place outside of Indian restaurants that have them. Honestly, I never saw buffet restaurants as a norm until I moved to the south. And the food at those places is usually below mediocre to downright bad.

I am pretty sure you won't find many of those buffet restaurants in the Chicago area outside of the suburbs.
