Seriously. I just wish I would've seen this in the afternoon so I'd get more work done this morning. Old Cushman loved the sunbathers of Promontory Point.

How about this shot of the Chicago river in 1945...

This old skyline may look shrimpy compared to what you see today, but if you do any research into the old Loop it had so much more action back in the day, with dozens of theaters and high-end shops. The Loop has lost a lot of energy and prominance to the Mag Mile, but has definitely bounced back a bit from the lackluster 1980s. And it's certainly still the center for business!

I could remember when every weekend some drunk would wipeout in the 25 mph S curve. The drawbridge was originally set to have train tracks for a lakefront commuter train on the lower bed. But they didn't put train tracks on the lakefront on the north side. However, on the south ...

I'd love to see a subway under Inner Lakeshore Drive/Lincoln Park West/Lakeview Terrace/Marine Drive. I have no idea if it's feasible with the water table, however. It would be a mess to install, but there is so much density along the lakefront!

In a perfect world, LSD would be buried (with the area above turned to parkland, reconnecting the city to the lakefront) and a subway would run in tandem.

That picture is pretty famous. It's the quintessential "S-Curve" photograph. It's from the Charles W. Cushman Collection. He has lots of pictures of Chicago dating from 1939 to 1969 -- some 1,200 of them if I'm not mistaken. He has lots of pictures from all over the world actually -- there are almost 15,000 pictures at that website. Fortunately it has a very useful search function.

Right on. My guess wasn't a total stab in the dark. The file name was 05231963.jpg or something like that.

Why not run a light train in the middle of LSD?

Because there isn't enough room in the boulevard between them. You'd have to widen the corridor even more, which means losing more park space.

I think there is more than enough room in outer LSD north of North Ave to fit a train. If outer LSD was extended to Evanston, park space would be also gained as well as helping traffic on Sheridan and Broadway north of Hollywood to Evanston.

Maybe to fit A train... but not two, one in each direction.
