My mother-in-law is coming into town in June for her 50th birthday. She will be here for a weekend. One idea we had was going on a dinner cruise. Has anyone been on a cruise? Is it worth it?

I have been on the Odyessy Cruise , once for dinner, and once for brunch. Both times, the food has been very good, nice music (live jazz band) on the top with open air views of the gorgeous lake front. I really enjoyed the sunday brunch more, less crowded, nicer temps, and it is more reasonable $.

Default Odysse Cruise

I've been on that one too for the afternoon and it was pretty decent.

Another one to consider is the Architectural tours via boats down the Chicago river. But they don't offer a meal and you have to buy your tickets at an office in the city first. CAF Tours (http://www.architecture.org/tour_view.aspx?TourID=8 - broken link)

Anway, I'm sure you'd enjoy the Odysse. Just being on the water and seeing the skyline is worth it.

I wouldn't go out on a cloudy night. Its like riding on a shaky bus with average food. If its foggy and you can't see a thing the cruise just is not worth it.

Default Odyssey II

Go on the Odyssey II Cruise. It is like $80-120/person and definitely worth it. You will do better on a clear night. I prefer summer as you can catch the fireworks at Navy Pier while gazing out on Lake Michigan when the weather is nice. The food has been pretty good when I have gone.

I went on another dinner cruise aboard a smaller ship. We, as a bank, thought it would be good to have the entire boat, instead of floor as is typically done on the Odyssey (they have open seating also available for couples). It was a bust. They air and water show was cancelled due to rain and the food was not very good. I would have preferred Odyssey II, even with one floor devoted to our group and even with bad weather it would have been enjoyable. I don't remember the name of the other boat, but it sucked.

Definitely take your mother on a dinner cruise, but as the others have said check the weather.
