^ I had to look up Merrionette Park. I had never heard of it before this post. I wonder why it even exists. It has less than 2000 people.

Bedford park will never want to share all of the hotel and industrial taxes they collect with the city.

More likely for struggling inner-ring 'burbs on the south side - Harvey, Robbins, Calumet City, etc. They'd benefit from the financial resources and police force of a large city, and some argue that they should be annexed.

from a water right standpoint, "Chicago" already encompasses any suburb that falls within the natural basin on the great lakes. this is why the suburbs can get lake michigan water, up to a certain point. this is bound by state as well as international treaties

how is it meaningful if Houston has a higher or lower population than chicago, aside from bragging rights? it tells you absolutely nothing. seriously...who cares?

yea houston is "catching up"...its also over 600 square miles large. Chicago by comparison is 200 square miles....and still has more people. this is a pointless comparison, and says nothing about quality of life, the makeup or density of the neighborhoods, ease of transportation or walkability, overall investment or growth, etc. The fringes of Houston are essentially sprawlville suburbia.

San Francisco has "only" 800,000 people...but its also 46 square miles. does this make houston better or worse, or would you agree its entirely irrelevant, and that neither city is anything alike at all?

In real life.
The city and suburbs work as a whole.
Borders don't magically keep residents from crossing them.
I can walk to Chicago from Maywood.
It's the same culture.

That's almost a Haiku.

Urban yet sprawling
The Chi ceases to amaze
Nothing like Maywood

Most of Houston does not look like a city from any traditional definition. Looks like Schaumburg.

Schaumburg? Downtown Houston is pretty dense. And of course, it has sports teams, two airports, even light rail.

From perusing the internet, a developer wanted to create an affordable place to live for vets returning from WWII. Like most towns that border Chicago, such as Harwood Heights, Norridge and Evergreen Park as examples, they probably also wanted to avoid being annexed at the time.
