I recently read a piece saying the Chicago accent was dying and this inspired me to write a piece on the Chicago accent that I've been working on for some time now. Let me know if there is something specific to your neighborhood accent-wise or culturally that I may have missed.

I hope you enjoy it:

Kitty-corner, Circle (UIC), Chicago's 16" Softball and gym shoes (rather than sneakers or tennis shoes)
and street names (excluding the avenue, street and/or road). Northwest Highway is the one exception
that I can think of right now.

Came across this below:

It's been on the decline for years. These days, young people (30s and below) in the city are unlikely to have the accent, though many will still have it in the more white/working-class suburbs. I ended up with the accent somehow and I'm 23, but most of my friends didn't really.

I think Inland North accents are holding on a little better in Wisconsin and Cleveland.

Thank you, everyone! You know... like nearly a decade later. I have immensely updated it recently.

Listening to interviews with Bob Woodward of Watergate investigation fame, I was pleasantly surprised by his strong midwestern accent. He is originally from Geneva, Illinois. Some people’s accents lose their edge and/or take on their adopted region’s characteristic inflection to a degree.

I actually think quite opposite is happening.

Seems like the accent is actually more pronounced than before especially in the suburbs, but I've been gone for a lil while now so maybe I just notice it more.

And I've noticed more younger Latino, Arab and Indian Americans that have picked up the local accent that was previously associated with Irish and polish Americans.

The Chicago accent is a mix of "city" and "Canadian". Take a Minnesota/Wisconsin accent and harshen/roughen it up some, and obviously use the Chicago vernacular.

I don't think that it has its own source - it's a blend.
