Well, approximately 80% of Chicago homicide victims are African Americans and 13% are Hispanic. Hispanics and blacks are now about equal population wise in the city.

I’m obviously no expert in this, being a white guy, but you rarely hear about race related beefs between blacks and Latinos in Chicago. Definitely not like you hear about them in LA. My guess is that since Chicago is somewhat segregated by race (especially in the neighborhoods where there is gang activity), both groups “stay in their lane/turf” and you don’t get many alterations. Many of the bad neighborhoods, there is no real reason to go to, so it’s unlikely you’d have a Latino in the bad part of Englewood at night, and a black person could safely visit the vibrant parts of a Latino neighborhood without problem.

I have been around Hispanic people my entire life. I speak fluent Spanish. I lived in Spain and I minored in Spanish with emphasis on Latin American studies. Most of my dad’s side of the family lives in South America for Pete’s sake (my dad is Portuguese). When I lived in LA I was the only non-Hispanic in my office and I was basically accepted as one of them. I was welcomed by Hispanic communities everywhere in Southern California actually.

The level of rejection and hostility I experienced in Little Village, despite speaking fluent Spanish, was something I have, categorically, never experienced anywhere else in the US. So if I have a chip on my shoulder yes it is with respect to that particular area. Even Pilsen was a completely different experience. I will say I did meet a couple of nice people, but for the most part it was a cold and negative experience.

That is odd.
Maybe they are jealous of you?

I didn’t get that vibe. I look like a gringo, so I’m sure they just regarded me as such. But normally, when I speak to people in Spanish and they learn about how immersed I am in Latin American culture, they open up and are very warm, particularly recent immigrants. It was just a uniquely bizarre experience there.
