Well, in fact Lincoln Park has changed for the better. At least in terms of wealth and lack of crime. The changes are sweeping and obvious to anyone living here. Though many would say that it has lost much character.

There was a time, and it wasn't that long ago in the grand scheme of things, when going to Goose Island on Clybourn was still considered a dicey proposition after dark, especially if you took public transportation. In fact there wasn't much reason to be anywhere on Clybourn back then. Now all of a sudden it's a massive, congested retail/dining/clubbing corridor from Halsted clear to Wrightwood.

^ Though that was never called Lincoln Park. It was part of the Clybourn Industrial Corridor. It was never really a neighborhood until recently. ^

It is not "crap." There is a difference between perception, spin, massage, and reality.

Anyone remember the Hunt Club? That was Gary Fencik's place on Clybourn and Sheffield (not positive on location), that was the first place on Clybourn I remember anyone talking about as a destination.

Yeah, the Hunt club was often bursting at the seams with imbibers, and it was just stumbling distance from Mitchells as I remember. Up to that time Clybourn was pretty much just a collection of stained old industrial buildings, with a peppering of old shabby frame houses left over from the pre-Cabrini days. Structures somewhat reminiscent of Little Hell.

I would love to see some pics of that stuff from the 80's to mid 90's. Taking the Elston/Clybourn bus used to be quite an adventure...

I vaguely do. You do know there is a Hunt Club in the Viagra triangle right? I wonder if it is any relation to the Fencik place.

Anyway, while looking for info on the Fencik place I found this article:

September 30, 1985
Pride Of The Yuppies
On the field, Gary Fencik is a Bear of a player; off it, he's the upwardly mobile professional man
by Rick Telander

"Fencik sits in the sun at an outdoor table at his bar, the Hunt Club. He is one of three partners who bought the building, remodeled it and opened this chic pub in the New Town section of Chicago..."

On the field, Gary Fencik is a Bear of a player; off it, - 09.30.85 - SI Vault

It is on another topic but does anyone remember when I mentioned New Town before?

So would I. Clybourn was a good street trafficwise. Even at rush hour you could often fly up and down. I think traffic was lighter on the street, because many people affiliated it with Cabrini at it's south end. Those were the peak years of Cabrini violence. Right before divison street, there was a terrific fried chicken place called Farmer Browns. Despite obvious racial tensions, the place was pretty friendly for it's small white clientele. Even the gangs practiced a truce around the store, because nobody thought it was a good idea to gun someone down on their way to supper.

I never rode the Clybourn/Elston circuit. Where did they mesh? At Belmont?
