I’m planning a solo trip to Chicago as first time visitor in early December. How is Chicago during this time of the year? I hope the city has the Christmas spirit feel and magical. Is it as nice as during the summer months? Taking picture over Lake Michigan and the rivers hopefully it won’t be frozen by then.

I found cheap flight + hotel deals. Planning on staying for 3 days/2 nights.

Early december it will not be frozen. That comes a little later.

Summer is the key time to visit IMNSHO.

Weather will be a roll of the dice, but the norm that time of year will be a high around 35 and low around 25. Yes on the Christmas feel! State street and the mag mile will be lit up. Also, there will be ice skating, the big tree lighting and the criskindlmarket.

I would agree that the weather is not the worst by a long shot, the temps are lower later -- though there have record lows in December the periods most likely to have an extended block of sub-zero weather is generally well into January -- https://wgntv.com/2017/12/29/what-is...elow-freezing/

As to how much "Christmas Spirit" one is likely to find in EARLY December I would caution that most residents will NOT want to start focus on Christmas spending and such until the middle/ latter half of December. Part of this is because of the tendency for there to be at least some temps in the 50's, though often with high humidity / chance of rain or snow -- https://www.currentresults.com/Weath...n-december.php Folks who know how bleak Feb & March can be want to "cling" to autumn-ish weather as long as possible.

Another part of the potential for lack of "that holiday spirit" is that shoppers have been "conditioned" to take advantage of "free shipping deals" that typically peak about a week before Christmas to take advantage of the 'added capacity' that UPS, FedEX, and USPS add with part-timers -- If You Want a Deal, These are the Best Days To Buy Christmas Gifts | Fortune that means that "last minute in person shopping" typically peaks the weekend before Christmas which this year will be Saturday & Sunday the 22nd & 23rd -- this will be when Macys and other big retailers have their last chance to "get into the black" and they will run promotions to get folks into their stores.

That week / weekend is also when CSO does their Handel performances -- https://cso.org/ticketsandevents/pro...andel-messiah/ Of course there are a variety of other performance venues that will be running holiday fare the whole month of December or longer -- https://www.chicago-theater.com/cate...h=12&year=2018

Can vouch for the Christkindal market. Definitely the epitome of the Christmas spirit. Going down Michigan Ave with the all the lights. Holiday lights at the Lincoln Park zoo.

If someone had an extended stay in the area, downtown Evanston and downtown Naperville, and lots of other suburbs, have nice really Christmas lights too.

Temperatures are a crap shoot. It could be in the fifties or as low as the thirties. I remember light snow sometimes in early December or even before. Keep a watch on the weather reports to see.

Looks like it's going to be colder than normal next week. Best advice is to dress like an eskimo! pay special attention to feet, hands and head/ears. Better to be a little warm vs. shivering like a madman!
