I've been to Denver a few times. It's a nice city and the mountain backdrop is pretty. Chicago is a much better city though with virtually everything you could ever want in a city and the lake is a beautiful backdrop as well.

The murder rate is terrible, but the vast majority of homicides are mostly isolated to the neighborhoods you realistically wouldn't visit. I just don't see many transplants moving to Englewood, West Garfield Park, Austin, etc.

The winters are pretty awful though, no way around it.

Dallas and Houston are tacky, generic, and Suburban feeling. I was looking to move out of Houston (hell) and picked Chicago due to career opportunities in Finance sector I was considering Seattle and even thought of Denver. I have lived in Seattle and Portland when they were much more affordable, and Denver seems to be having similar issues (rapid population growth, traffic, bubbly housing market). I do think that legalizing cannabis has had a positive economic impact in these three cities. Illinois needs to legalize/tax it and it will help solve the financial situation. I have been to Denver once in 2014, nice city but still lacks the true urban feel, and has a sunbelt feel. I would picked Denver over any Texas city, but I value urban amenities more, so Chicago wins for me.

I would honestly take Lake Michigan over the Rockies. The view of the lake from the shore in Evanston is fantastic. The Rockies are a bit of a drive from downtown Denver, and if skiing isn't your thing, then their importance diminishes. Much more to see and do in Chicago, anyways..
