I think the Teachers, Nurses and also Skilled Trades Unions are very effective in getting higher salaries.... and especially better benefit packages. But so many for common folk are long gone. Its a hire and fire game for some to help prevent it. I'm surprised that fear even exist .... especially in small-city America.
I was only ever in two unions for my first full-time jobs.

One company was Radio Steel or Flyer. Then they manufactured wheel barrels and wagons on Grand Ave. They still maintain ther Corporate headquarters there last time I checked. Has a big a radio Flyer outside. But of course the manufacturing moved to China from the suburbs first I believe. Their were all older Italian Immigrants then employed. But the push in the 70s to hire minorities had all new employees minorities but me. A Greek friend of my Aunt's got me in. I made a good wage there at 18. Then the big recession of the early 80s hit and I was laid off. I virtually immediately took a job at a A&P as a night sticker .... that was by Lawrence & Cumberland then. It eventual had all A&P's close in Chicagoland. I also had a short time with a union grocery chain in PA. They were in a two tiered full-timers full union benefits and new hires only maxed out on 29 1/2 hours a week and lower pay. They still exist in the East but much smaller then their better days called Acme. At least I think they still do.....

Only they were Union I ever worded for. I remember nothing on the Union dues collected out of my check. Better paying manufacturing jobs helped build Chicago's bungalow belt and the next decades of housing that did not have to be the cheapest row-housing type.

But professionals in unions outside of Trades and other outside workers and manufacturing left. I see differently then intended. They thrive by being skilled and limited in new hires available. Just some of my opinion that is all. Now corporations set the rules, numbers grades on speed graded common workers by computer and many fire for too slow a performance. Cameras monitor all movement and you conform to expectations or ..... a few like Wegman's in retail I work for has good relationship with its employees and understands life's issues for take-offs and illness to different starting times. Goggle is another with high marks for reasons.

One Irony is we were to be on a 30-hour work-week for the future way back then. Never happened.

Also you and steeps are the same person, change my mind.
Fine. I'll admit it. I am a full blown racist. In my youth, I dragged Rosa Parks off her seat and dragged her to the back of the bus. I send my sheets to the laundry to have them professionally cleaned and when I get them home, I don't put them on my bed...but do put them over my head. I've been working hard to have the Obama library moved from Chicago to Nairobi, next to the hospital where he was born, where it belongs. I'm one of the "good people on both sides" in Charlottesville when I carried my tiki-torch. I only use a red marker to draw because I only draw red lines.

I am steeps. I am steeped in being steeps. Whoever he is. And I have no desire to change your mind.

So you win, VA, I'm racist, out, been tagged and since it has "been explained to you numerous times", I finally got it. I've been wrong here and I admit it: I wish to thank you and Bru and CSS for letting me know exactly who and what I am. Thanks for the deft job of defining me. I have cancelled future visits to my therapist because you guys have my back covered on that issue.

There I've said it: every word true, of course: so can we move on. Everybody knows Ol' Ed is a racist. Ol' Ed is a card carrying racist (do you wish for me to upload the card in my wallet to show all? I'm proud of it...it has George Wallace's signature on it. He even wrote, "Ed today, Ed tomorrow, Ed forever") What is left to talk about? I am now successfully outed for the racist-from-hell I am. Can we move on?

Thanks for your kind and helpful thoughts....and you have a great day.

Does Master Jay need to bring some more positive energy to this forum ?!?

I said it before, sometimes words CAN get misconstrued because they don't have the intonation or the emotion behind it to convey the actual message.

Sometimes words get taken out of context.

I trust you all have no intent to disrespect anybody!

Peace!

Hear! Hear! again the wonderful word of reason from you...and Jay, you truly are a master. Thanks again for your wise thoughts. Seriously....people like you are the very wise and aware folks we need here on this board. I like your values, Jay. A lot.

And I fully agree with you on taking words "out of context", am a true supporter of the notion of "give them the benefit of the doubt." Thus I am totally comfortable with myself that I didn't disrespect any of my fellow forumers by telling who they are and what I think of them or putting words in their mouth. There is nothing that anyone has written here on the topic of the city's population that I found offensive on any level.

As for me, I believe this discussion is supposed to be about Chicago's population and if it will crack the 3 million mark.

Discussions on edsg25's racism are valid and a real concern to some on this board. They do need to be opening discussed. May I suggest....even encourage....a new thread here "edsg25 is a racist!!!!" and move the discussion there. That will leave this thread staying on topic: Chicago's population

On a serious note, well, at least I've lost my anger. Completely. And reached a total comfort level with anyone calling me a racist. Knock your socks off doing so; I'm cool with it. And my response will be...well, hopefully nothing. I certainly won't be insulting you. And I certainly will not define you.

When you say, "I trust you all have no intent to disrespect anybody!"....I'm with you. 110%.

edsg25, in trying to be fair, everyone here tries to share their own experiences, and there is nothing wrong with that. I'd be interested to see an opportunity to meet in a public forum to discuss ANY topic. At the end of the day, it's ok to agree to disagree. I work in the Milwaukee County Jail during the day and teach martial arts at night. I have countless interactions with co-workers, clients, collaterals, etc; and I'm certain many people on here have to have numerous interactions as well. Point being: we can't possibly make everyone happy with our thoughts. But if we come from a good place within, and mean no disrespect, I think we're going to be alright!- In case I haven't said it; I LOVE YOUR CITY!- Master Jay in Milwaukee

Yeah, you say that now, but wait until Milwaukee gets its own NFL team. Maybe the Raiders? I heard once that Swiss Colony was thinking of purchasing the Green Bay team and moving it down to Milwaukee. The only problem was, they were going to rename them "The Fudge Packers".

Finally, I'm sure you are familiar with "How do you keep bears out of your yard in Wisconsin? You install goal posts". Not as true this year, but we'll find out in a week or two.

My only experience with Milwaukee was to travel to Waukesha to purchase some specialized adhesive (Sika Flex) my company needed for a project twenty years ago. That, and my Dept. visited a manufacturer up there to look at a cooling tower we were considering purchasing. Seemed like a nice enough place, folks treated us well. I'm sure I don't have to explain the difference between Cheeseheads and S***theads to you, LOL.

Keep up the Good Work, "Blessed are the Peacemakers".

I really do look at it as two metropolitan areas growing together. There is really nothing like this in the middle west. No two major midwestern cities (KC, StL, M/SP, Ind, Det, Cle, Col, Cin) are anywhere near as close to another as Chicago and Milwaukee are.

I don't know if you saw the thread I started on the GenUS forum, it being about living between two cities. In it, I made a rather long (ok....so most of my posts are long..mea culpa) about the Chgo-Milw relationship and how good it is.

Milwaukee has its charms, it's attractions...and they are so easily accessed, unlike the hassle that Chicago can be. And there is something special that only Chicago and Milwaukee have: cities built on open water, their downtowns directly on them, that only the Great Lakes could provide (none of our cities' downtowns in any major city...Bos, NY, Mia, Hou, SD, LA, SF, Sea...... is directly on the ocean....and for good reason as it can be a precarious place to be). So only Chicago and Milwaukee face out to the open waters of the Great Lakes in a way that provides a beautiful lakefront (Cleveland and Buffalo were not able to create the same).

There is so much good in that urban belt along the southwest shores of Lake Michigan.

Curly Q. Bobalink, believe it or not, I do NOT follow sports. Granted, Tae Kwon Do is a sport. But I started martial arts as a young teenager for the exercise, the discipline, and to participate in something outside of "traditional" athletics... So when people make comments about Brewers vs. Cubs, Packers vs. Bears, etc., it never impacts me. I went to the Brewers stadium a couple of years ago when they played the Cubs, and I "cheered" for Chicago ... I worked in Waukesha for 6 years (4 years working with adults with mental health illness, and 2 years managing a fitness center) and I grew to really enjoy Waukesha. I'm glad you enjoyed your couple of experiences here... I've been coming down to Chicago very often, beginning in 1998. I've dated a few women from Chicago, and have had many discussions with people in the city, that think I'm from Chicago. And I take it as a compliment. It's my SECOND HOME!... And BLESS YOU, TOO! Have a great day!- Master Jay in Milwaukee
