Hi guys,

I recently moved to Wrigleyville, renting with a friend. I have a car, and there's only permit parking. We intend to apply for a permit. Problem is my name is not on the lease papers and he doesn't have a license.
He's in the process of practicing driving and studying for the written test, but this could take a week to 10days before he gets his license and we can apply for a parking permit.
So are there are free parking spots around that I can park for the next 7-10 days?

Garages are expensive. I'm looking for something cheaper or free preferable.

Thanks

If you need to drive daily, I can't really help you. If you just need to leave it in the same place for 7-10 days, park on Grace just north of Trader Joe's just east of Lincoln.

When you say permit, are you referring to the chicago city sticker? If so, it will be fine to park in the street without as long as your car isn't registered in Chicago (at least temporarily as you have 30 days to get it). I've lived in the city for 8 years and haven't ever bought one (always had private spots).

If you're referring to the parking permit sticker for certain zones, you can always get Guest Passes for cheap. Just have your roommate go into the aldermans office and pick up some guest stickers. A whole book is like $7 and you can stick multiples on at a time for each day. Just make sure you write each date out on each sticker. I know for a fact they don't need proof of license for this. It can even be done online and shipped straight to you. You will need to prove residency by showing your lease, and perhaps a bill or two in your roommates name.

If all of the above fails, there is plenty of free parking out west past damen but be careful because you can always get a ticket if you don't check your car. It's very frequent that they post do not parking signs and you are expected to move your car if they do. I once got it because somebody was moving so they registered the spots for their truck, the sign got posted within 2 days and expected me to move in the next 2 days. I ended up getting a $75 ticket when I came back on the 5th day.

Good call with the stickers. They can be purchased even if the roommate doesn't have a license.

If you're an early riser, you can play the game of parking on metered parking during the overnight. I believe the meters stop at 10PM and start at 8AM? It's risky business though.
