Forgive me if this doesn’t make sense. Living in Richmond (midsize city) I do a lot of weekend trips. 2 hours in every direction is an attraction. To the east is Virginia Beach, to the north is Washington DC and to the west are the mountains. However, I’m thinking if I could afford to live in DC I would have no reason to leave the area other than to go to the beach. Since Chicago has a beach do you leave to city for pleasure often? If you do where do you go in under 4 hours drive?

In under 4 hours? Many Chicagoans own homes in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, the Indiana Dunes, and Southwest Michigan. Many also own farms in the surrounding area (some still within the metro). Starved Rock State Park is a popular getaway.
