The metro region has surged past several longtime stalwarts to become home to more breweries than any other city in the nation — 167 — according to statistics published this week by the Brewers Association.

Awesome news! My favorite is Miller Lite...it's a microbrew based outta Milwaukee that relocated to Chicago. Give it a try sometime...

I would say 60% aren't good unfortunately. I'm a huge beer fan and don't really care for a lot of places around here.

Frankly, I have not been to many Chicago-area breries, at least relative to the scope, but I appreciate the ones I have been to. Revoultion (Milwaukee), Half Acre, Two Bros. (Warrenville, Aurora), the mix of breweries in the West Loop Gate area (On Tour, GI, Great Central, etc.)... all enough to remind me of the brewing riches in the Chicao. Even Exit Strategy in FP is a decent little brewery. I like Wild Onion in OP, even if it's a tied house. Too bad Two Bros. closed in OP, but that was driven more by regulatory circumstance than market.

^ Those are all great. I'm also a huge fan of Off Color and Dovetail.

I'm quite curious as to where you get your 60% figure. Chicago and the surrounding areas have a ton of excellent breweries. Just off off the top of my head, here are some that offer excellent beer:

Half Acre, Metropolitan, Marz, Dovetail, Hop Butcher for the World, Off Color, Revolution, Begyle, Saint Errant, On Tour, Piece, Hopewell, Corridor, Dry Hop, More, Haymarket, Pipeworks, 3 Floyds, Maplewood, Great Central, Eris, Forbidden Root, Old Irving, Lo Rez, Cruz Blanca, Spiteful, Alarmist, Band of Bohemia, Sketchbook, Middle brow, Une Anee/Hubbards Cave, Mikerphone

That is a list I could think of in a minute, and I know there are a lot more. I'm curious which 40% you think are good. I have about 3 breweries in the city that I'm not a fan of because I haven't liked a single one of their offerings, but that's it.

Good point and good list, maybe the 60% was too high.

I guess I only don't like Metropolitan, Hopewell, and Haymarket on your list (these may be unpopular opinions). And I haven''t tried Hop Butcher, Saint Errant, Great Central, Eris, Une Anee.

Fair enough. It did take me a bit to grow on Hopewell. I had some so-so experiences there and it definitely is not my favorite brewery in Chicago, but I've had some decent offerings by them over time. I really enjoy Metropolitan but prefer Dovetail for German beers. One thing I enjoy a lot about the Chicago scene is the variety of styles represented through the breweries. You can find German only breweries, experimental breweries like Forbidden Root, IPA heavy breweries like Hop Butcher, sours like Une Anee, etc. etc. You even have formally hop/IPA heavy breweries like Half Acre diversify more with more stouts, wilde ales, saisons and other variety. In other big beer cities, I've found that certain styles dominate everywhere (generally IPAs). I've been to too many Portland breweries that have 10 IPAs on tap.
