South Side Irish (SSI) how many Irish are on the South Side? (Chicago: 2014, neighborhood)

My mom is a self-described "SSI" South Side Irish. I was born on the North Side and lived in Jefferson Park until I was 7 years old. But, I was primarily raised in the Western Suburbs of Chicago. Ancestrally, I descend from 5 Ethnic groups and I am racially White. As of late, I've decided to be one of the 10% of Americans that self-identify as both ethnically and nationally American. I am religiously Catholic and have Mental Illness. I have some college but failed to get a degree. I just wanted to tell you a little bit about me for the sake of getting to know me in relation to my question. Now, let's get started..

I love that I am from Chicago! My Chicago Culture is very much apart of who I am. But, I am very confused about about the page on Wikipedia about the South Side of Chicago. Several people on my mother's side call themselves South Side Irish and are White Sox fans. But, I can't seem to find much demographic information on the South Side outside of Wikipedia. The reason I say I'm confused is because Wikipedia says that 93% of the South Side is black. How can this be?

I did a little investigating and determined that Wikipedia was not talking about the whole Side Side when it said 93% of the South Side is black. Because, I've determined that about 125,000 white people live on the whole South Side, when going by each Community Area listed on Wikipedia. And, that 80,000-100,000 of the 125,000 white people on the South Side would have to be South Side Irish.

The term South Side Irish was created decades ago.

Lots of people that originally lived on the South Side have scattered over many decades.

I also kind of doubt any of your numbers. Also not understanding how you've come up with the random 80-100K figure of the number of people that are South Side Irish. Wikipedia is not a reliable source.

My number is not random. On Wikipedia it tells you the demographic of each Community Area. For example Mount Greenwood is 86% white and almost entirely Irish.

His point is that you do not use wikipedia for such numbers. Go elsewhere for that.

You seem to jump from interest in ‘South Side Irish’, but then hop over to ‘white’ population numbers in a big chunk of Chicago. There were no other (white) identifiable ethnic groups living on the south side(?)

This sounds like one of those GRE prompts where you have to prove why the argument is faulty.

I imagine the number of Irish being higher than that maybe not. There are perhaps several factors for why they arrived at 40% and not 60% Irish.

I'm not one to make wild guesses, so I can't say either way. That said, neither number is "almost entirely Irish".

You're right. But, maybe 70% of the White population.
