Here’s a tip Harry Osterman, when pretending you’re against the Lincoln Yard TIF try not to compare it to Schaumburg. Schaumburg is a cheaper place to live than Chicago. Clearly you haven’t traveled outside of Chicago much? This is why people think midwesterners are ignorant.

“This is super-sized. This is Schaumburg Yards — not Lincoln Yards,” Osterman said.
“This is the rich getting richer. This is the North Side getting norther.”

As a non-Illinoisian (well, for the time being) and a photographer, I assumed "TIF" probably wasn't a type of digital photo file and is some sort of tax deal. And, well, looks like I was right.

If this project really did create 24,000 jobs, it seems like a pretty good deal compared to the packages Amazon has been getting offered for their "HQ2" that I'm not convinced will ever exist at this point, plus ostensibly more of the money would stay in Chicago. Also, increasing values expand the tax base in an older industrial area that isn't as productive as it used to be, therefore offsetting at least some of the cost.

I've lived in Dayton and Detroit, where a lot of this stuff is sitting around empty or underused and being nonproductive. That's not doing anybody any good, and it's pretty clear by now that the MAGA promises aren't going to scrape the rust off the belt. Time to try something else.

I mean if this place gets built and you asked me what the most similar Chicago area most similar to Schaumburg, I'd say Lincoln Yards, don't @ me.
