Anyone know anything about it?
It's just like hesgwich in ehich it's isolated from the rest of the city via factories and rivers.

Looking to perhaps move there.
Seems affordable. Not super dangerous like the majority of the SS.
Only drawbacks are no large amounts of business.
But ill be driving so it doesn't matter.

Any first hand experience anyone?

This won't be very useful but I used to visit a few friends in Hegewisch in the 90s and it was pretty chill. Never felt unsafe walking to nearby taco joint or liquor store for some beer. (once driving to hegewisch of course). Was very quiet compared to other parts. I cannot for the life of me remember what streets however.

I went to the East Side neighborhood on business a number times in the past few years. Never felt unsafe walking in the area, or patronizing businesses there.

It's true that shopping is somewhat spotty in the area. The only large supermarket to serve it is a Pete's Fresh Market, which is located in the East Side Plaza at 118th St. and Avenue O.

The population is a majority Hispanic, but there are sizeable numbers of Serbs, Croats, and Poles living there as well.

Of course, since the East Side borders Hammond IN, most of its residents cross the border to fill their gas tanks.

Yeah. That must be a pretty good benefit.
Shopping to avoid taxes.

Chicago_Person, I met a lady on a date who is from East Side. She was Hispanic. And she confirmed that there is a population of Croatians there (I am Mexican and Croatian, so I was interested to hear about it). And yes, it is close enough to Indiana... I've never been to Hegewisch, but I'd like to do a compare and contrast of the areas...P.S. For a Milwaukeean, an East Sider date is way too far to keep up a relationship! Master Jay in Milwaukee

I think it's one of Chicago's hidden gem neighborhoods, great freeway access has downtown in 20 mins that's really good.

In my many years traveling to, and briefly living in Chicago, I never heard any reference to the East Side. Seriously, I thought this was a joke like the North Side of Cleveland, both putting you in one of the Great Lakes. ... Areas like Hegewisch and other nearby areas were always called the Far South Side... never the 'East Side'... but perhaps things of changed ... for the weird, that is...

This neighborhood is referred to as The East Side because its on the east bank of the Calumet River. This river meets Lake Michigan at approximately 87th St. The East Side's land mass is connected to Indiana to the east and Hegewisch to the south.

I have heard people residing east of Stony Island Ave. starting with South Shore referring to the area as the "East Side".

The south side is huge( it's nearly as big as Detroit or Philly in square miles), so it's easy for people to split it into different sub-regions.
