We like the local international produce markets. Jerry's in Niles is a great example. Also Fresh Farms on Touhy in Niles is great. Or Tony's. Trader Joe's for some of the more exotic items at very good prices. Aldi is ok too.

You did say Chicagoland area, not the city. There are some good produce markets in the City too - Stanleys is one. I can't remember if they have more than produce there or not though.

Chicago area has many farmers markets natives aren't aware of. These markets are frequented by immigrants of various ethnicities, and they are great. Inexpensive and having a great variety.
We love Garden Fresh Market in Mundelein. It is not close to where we live, but we get many circulars in the mail with ads from various other markets in the area that also look promising (Lewis Market and such).
Aldi is inexpensive but very limited. I also love Mariano's which is now a Kroger company, and I miss Kroger and their sales. I found prices and promotions at Mariano's to be very similar to what I am used to shopping at Kroger, and whenever I am nearby I always stop by. Produce is definitely cheaper there than at Jewel-Osco. I never go to Whole Foods or Heinens as they are ridiculously overpriced.
I miss going to ONE store for everything and enjoying good prices while there. What I find myself doing here in the Chicago area is going to different stores for different things, and it is tiring. We used to have a Kroger across the street from where we lived and it had everything and so much more at a great price, too.
