Is it common for people to live in kenosha or racine and work in chicago? What are the safe areas of kenosha and racine? What is the rent like for apartments in these areas?

To answer your first question: Yes, it is common for people to live in, especially Kenosha, and work in Chicago or the northern suburbs. I know a man in his thirties who lives in Kenosha and takes the Metra to the Loop daily. It's a very long commute, mind you.

The US Census Bureau considers Racine to be part of Milwaukee's CSA and Kenosha to be part of Chicago's. Part of these designations is based on commuting patterns.

Even so, Kenosha is roughly 50 miles north of downtown Chicago. As the above poster wrote, this is a long commute if you will be employed in downtown.

Post in the wisconsin forum to ask about kenosha vibe.

Use apartments.com as a baseline if you need to live close to the kenosha metra stop.

I'm not familiar with either town. Have never visited...

That being said, I know many people who live in the Kenosha area and travel down. Some to the City (that's a LONG commute, as Hiruko said), but most aren't going that far and are stopping in the northern suburbs. It's completely do-able for them. One of my friends just bought a house in Kenosha (moving from Trevor, WI) and works in Northbrook.

Your dollar definitely goes further up there.

I'm from Milwaukee, and yet I know more about Chicago, than the 2 counties right below me! I've ridden the train down only a couple times. There's several stops, so if you work in Illinois you might want to tske a train ride to see how long bbn it takes. Cerrainly prices are lower here in Wisconsin. we certainly dont have that 7 cent plastic bag tax that I discovered in Chinatown a couple weeks ago!! Historically, Racine and Kenosha have had many Chicagoans migrate north. Some diversity up here! Wherever you end up, I wish you success and happiness! Master Jay in Milwaukee

I know you don't want to live in "Ray-Silly", it's not the safest place to be. However one of the wealthiest places in Wisconsin is right over there in Wind Point, WI.

My nephew lives in Milwaukee and has a job in downtown Chicago. He works from home but does have to be at the office 1-2 days each week. He takes the train in on those days. Been doing it for years and doesn't mind it at all.

Amtrak would not be practical for the OP if you read his recent posts.

This sounds like the midwestern version of commuting from Providence to Boston ( or southern NH into Boston). After a while, most people get tired of it, and find other work locally, but there are a few that hang in there indefinitely...
