"never wanted to go" = never been
"sounds boring" = never been

Screenwriter70 = zero credibility

My SoCal relatives came to Chicago for a conference. We showed them around, etc. They were blown away by Chicago. I think people who haven't been here just think of it as a big bad city with mean gangs and crime everywhere.

Then they come, and they're like, "um, whoa". And they can't wait to come back.

Chicago is a bargain *to it's peers*

People get caught up in things that ALL big cities deal with. If Chicago were as affordable as some place like Indiana or wherever, I'd be very concerned.

I'm fortunate to live a mere 1-2 hour drive away! Ive done many sporadic drives alone, or with friends. Literally, I have done trips with friends just to get an excellent Korean meal, and a stop at a Korean grocery store. If someone has been here, and truly hated their experience, Id like to hear more about it. Chicago has so much to offer. If they truly dont like it, that is fine. We are allowed our opinion Master Jay in Milwaukee

That's not a fair assessment of the city. If you said it was a cesspool of political corruption I would agree with you.

You are in North Carolina, right. You really can't compare a city the size of Chicago with where you are. There are so many things to do here and there are a lot of great walking trails along the lake.

Don't believe everything you read in the newspapers. Crime is generally isolated to areas where tourists do not go.

Chicago haters are generally people who don't like cities.

Or have some personal bias against it that has no basis in the rest of the universe.

It's a horrible place, politically. But really, that hardly affects me. There are worse things to be bad at. Like transportation, or amenities, or layout, or attitudes, or food scene, or traditions, or vibe, or a whole bunch of other stuff that is great here.

Having grown up there (and moved away back in 82) all I can say is to visit is just fine. To live NO WAY. But frankly there are so many other amazing places to visit in this country I won't likely ever get back there. No reason to. Parents are gone and no more family there. There is certainly no draw significant enough to entice me to bother going back there. As for vacations my tastes lean a lot more towards clean air, open space and color and better yet some mountains. Once you've visited or live in the West/Northwest (no not Cali) one's attentions pretty much stick there. When you never have to look over your shoulder for safety or deal with intense traffic and all the people you meet are super friendly and helpful it's hard to imagine dealing with ANY huge city again let alone a Chicago. Just sayin........

Chicago is the best city, for some, not all! Everyone has different needs and prefer to live closer to where those needs are filled. City/Rural/cows/cabs/glam/salt o the earth/sports fan/artist/ppl w billions /ppl w thousands.

For me, Chicago is wonderful, a bargain compared to the other metropolis' I would like to live in.

If I was a hundreds millionaire, id stay in Chi part of the yr, maybe spend the winters in south of greece, italy, france, spain, and others destinations.
