IS it a bad city to live in?

That's a pretty broad question.

The city has great amenities and is a legitimate 2nd tier globally connected city. Cost of living is low compared to other cities in its tier in America and Europe (Los Angeles, San Francisco).

The very dangerous areas are pretty specific and known to everyone who lives here.

Otherwise, violent crime is on par generally with other major US cities. At the same time, there are serious fiscal solvency issues at the local and state level which pose a threat the Chicago's long-term viability and desirability.

If you want to be more specific, I'm sure some of the people here can answer.

Parts of it are, most of it is not. Most people who don't live in the bad areas just avoid them entirely. There really aren't a lot of reasons a random person would want to be in those areas, unfortunately they don't offer much in the way of retail, amenities, etc.

Yes, if you're not careful you could easily slip and fall into the river or lake. If that doesn't get you, you'll likely die early from cardiovascular disease due to all the pizza, sausage and beef sammiches we consume. And don't even get me started on the wind and subzero temps here!

flamadiddle, LOVE that you called them "sammiches"!!!! Well the lesson I learned (and I posted about this from last month) was to be careful about tapping someone on the shoulder to ask for directions, while awaiting an L train. Sooooooo, in all these years, THAT was the biggest problem I had in Chicago. I think that answers ANY of these: "Is Chicago dangerous?" questions. STAY WARM!- Master Jay in Milwaukee

Chicago's neighborhood annual murder rate per 100,000 ranges from below 1 (as safe as just about anywhere) to >30 (think Tiajuana).

If you aren't involved in drugs\gangs and stay out of the really bad areas it's plenty safe.

From your prior posts, YOU LIVE IN CHICAGO. What is the point of you asking? In my opinion, it is a great place to live, and I grew up in LA and lived in Boston before coming here. Don't you know since you live here?

Mod cut.
