for me, the litmus test is would you let your teen age daughter and her girlfriends walk around an area at night?
if the answer is yes, then the area is safe...

would you let your teenage daughter and her friends walk around here at night??
I wouldn't, not without armed escorts...

Does anything in Chicago pass this litmus test of yours?

as far as safety, sure...

I lived in on Albion near that area for years, and there we alot of rapes, assaults, car break ins, robberies, and, mega weirdos walking around all the time...I'm a foot ball player, with self defense skills, and I didn't like walking around there myself..

if you tell people that area is "safe", you are being disingenuous

Yeah, I think the advice there was to stay on Clark or other major streets and stay off the side streets. I do that in the places that make the spider-sense tingle.

For my part, I'm either a "mega weirdo" or the kind of guy you want to have on the El car when you have a couple kids trying to steal your purse, depending on what you look for. Back in Houston, I was a "mega weirdo" just for walking on the sidewalk in a city where everyone drives around the block to go to the gym.

*shrug*

as a few have stated, "situational awareness", and not looking like you are afraid, a tourist, or meek in any way helps..
and, yes, stick to major streets, as much as possible, and at night, try not to walk alone..
problem is, if you live on a side street, eventually, you have to turn off clark/ashland/sheridan, and head down the side street..

also, back then, getting assaulted meant getting hit with a tire iron or chain, or maybe, getting stabbed; of course now a days, getting shot is the biggest concern..

And please refrain from earbuds. If at all possible. Shutting out your best ability to hear things could be detrimental for a few reasons. Be safe everyone. If possible, learn self defense. Even if it's learn iij ng how to deflect a hand strike, or a grab!

One time, when I was living off Xenia Avenue in Dayton, I was walking back home from the local drive-thru shop (because I don't drive small distances like that if I can avoid it) with a gallon of milk and a 12-pack of beer. There's this lady sitting on her porch, looks like she's 38 going on 50, smoking a Newport, telling me how I need to get inside before somebody knocks me over and steals my milk. I showed her the beer in the other hand and told her they've got more to take than milk if they're feeling brave enough.

Then she probably went inside to make sure her tweaker/junkie sons didn't get into her stash of Percocet.

Then I moved to Detroit a few months later.

*sips coffee*

Right now, these sidewalks look more dangerous than anything else over this way, now that they've been snowed on, tamped down, half-melted and snowed on again. Let's find some Yankee fans so they can spread their salt over Derek Jeter and the Astros someplace where it's useful.

Any other side streets there in Rogers people should know about?

well, Morse was iffy at times, especially during summer beach season, and of course "Juneway Jungle" got that nickname for a reason..Frankly, even Howard street, a main busy thoroughfare, got really sketchy at times..Someone already mentioned Jonquil Terrace, and, Ashland, north of Pratt, was pretty scary for a long time too..

I live in that area on the lakeside. While I haven't felt particularly unsafe, I'd avoid the Howard station area at night. I work late nights and get off at Jarvis. It's still a gamble because things have happened around Jarvis station and I am female. Still, I would rather use Jarvis station at night over Howard station. I go around Howard station during the day if I just have to go to the Jewel there or if I have to grab something at that shopping center.
