Have any of you guys been in any other city around the world and seen something that reminded you a lot of something from Chicago?

I guess I'll start and both of these have to do with Lake Shore Drive.

* Istanbul, Turkey - Been there a handful of times, and every single time I ride on this one major road (Kennedy Caddesi) going into the old city from the airport (or visa versa) along the Marmara Sea, it reminds me of driving Lake Shore Drive on the north side and looking out on Lake Michigan and Lincoln Park. Some spots (not all) are eerily similar. Once you get passed Zeytinburnu (if you're going into Sultanahmet, the old city), the seafront is lined with greenspace for awhile.

The only photo I thought to snap:

* Singapore - Riding from Marina Bay Sands to the zoo, there's a highway where on one side has the sea and on the other has a bunch of high rises like Lake Shore Drive.

Cool Boston

Boston is basically what Chicago would have become, had downtown Chicago not burned to the ground in 1871.

Chicago and Toronto are brothers from different mothers.

In terms of size and Great Lakes location, probably Toronto. But Toronto really embraces messy urbanism and lacks Chicago's industrial grit & pre-war bones.

I've heard about some similarities to Melbourne (a city I've been dying to visit). I always wondered what Chicago would be like with laneways like Melbourne, especially since we have the alleyways to try it.

I remember when I first visited the Gran Via in Madrid, it reminded me of the Mag Mile. Not in terms of the architecture, but more in terms of it being a wide thoroughfare with abundant upscale shopping on either side and a similar energy/vibrancy. This makes sense to a degree - though Madrid is an older city than Chicago, this part of Michigan Avenue actually predates the Gran Via, the latter requiring the demolition of several buildings and not completed until 1924. However, they are both roughly the same age and were constructed to cater to both trains and autos, reflective of the era in which they were built.

I've been to Melbourne quite a bit. I've heard the comparison to Chicago, but the more time I spent there, the less it made sense. Although if you squint maybe the Yarra is like the Chicago River.

Turning the question around, Printer's Row reminds me of certain parts of Prague or Vienna - specifically some of the areas built around 1900 or so.

Very interesting. I actually met some tourists from Amsterdam who told me that Wicker Park reminded them a lot of some part of Amsterdam. I've never been and I don't remember which part they said (probably was a long name too).
