I'd love to leave Illinois for a red state or at least a mixed state but my job is golden handcuffs. There are so many awful employers of chemists that I have no appetite for taking risks with my employment. I spent 3 years with no benefits previously. So I am stuck here until I can retire with front row seats for this Democrat driven train wreck.

Yep I tried to escape when I graduated 10 years ago, moved to rural NE GA about 100 miles from Atlanta. Took the first job that offered >$40k with benefits (nothing but $15 an hour permatemp offers here). Loved living there but the job was a cluster F and I got laid off after 9 months and no other jobs there but Walmart.

I work with a couple guys that are non stop Chicago complainers too. Everytime I say move, same answer, well my career and money are here. I ask if they see a connection between said high paying gig and the city even at all? They made a lot ot money here and could not elsewhere. They huff and walk away.

Taking their pile of money elsewhere is appealing as they approach 60years old. Their counterpart stuggling in some other poorer area where they will arrive with their Chicago pile of money probably does not see the world the same. Said other person will be 60 one day and not have had the opportunity to get ahead at all due to their $15hr "high paying" right to work job no matter how much less property taxes are.

If you graduated 10 years ago, in another 10 years you may find the curve increases even more that you can make even more money here as you hit that sweet spot of your career. Careful what one wishes for.

This is not R vs. D. Most things aren't despite the arguments here. Overall there is greater opportunity to get ahead here. Paying a couple thousand extra in taxes and rent to make $20,000 or more extra a year. Seems a no brainer. I know everyone will put out other examples but this is the reality for many, especially college educated white collar workers. In my field I was way better off here than other places as well. That's part of my overall life, doesn't mean I can't find fault here but if one is honest this is part of the dialogue.

when my lease is up next april, I am 99% sure i will.. depends where to go. if i have to continue to go into the office, i will have to live in a good commute, probably in Lakeview, a short bus ride to work.

but ideally, if they let us work 100% remotely, im outie, i love Wheaton, Fox lake area, maybe Mt Prospect or Elk Grove. Sweet areas! all have lots of nature nearby, Busse Woods for one.
