our max rent limit is $650. hopefully with most or all utilities included.

2) where are you working/going to school

I'll be going to columbia college. I'm getting my BFA in theatre so I'll probably be at the school at night for rehearsals/performances. so coming back home late and being safe is important. fiance is not sure where he's working yet.

3) what do you want in a neighborhood

we want transportation to be close by (preferably the red line), a grocery store or two, coffee shop, etc.

what we want in an apartment: the most square footage (400 and up) we can possibly find for the low rent. a studio most likely (doubt we can find a one bedroom for that price). a kitchen you could turn around in. a nice-sized closet. cat-friendly.

which neighborhoods would you recommend we look in? I guess we'll have to sacrifice space in order to stay safe...
Have you considered looking with an apartment finding service? They are free and can help you find a safe area. There are a ton listed in the first thread.

Also, just checking out craigslist, I would maybe check out a few of these (they may be tiny, but are safe, near transportation, and seem to be cat friendly):

LAKEVIEW/WRIGLEY STUDIO ALL THE PERKS (http://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/apa/662407606.html - broken link)
LINCOLN PARK STUDIO ALL THE PERKS (broken link)
1 and 2 room studios (broken link)
Great Lakeview studio at an even greater price! (broken link)

AFFORDABLE STUDIO (broken link)
CHARMING STUDIO LOCATED 1 BLOCK FROM THE LAKE ~ AVAIL JUNE 1! (broken link)
TERRIFIC STUDIO LOCATED 1 BLOCK FROM THE LAKE! AVAIL 5/1 & 6/1 (broken link)
Lakeview Studio with All Utilities Included! (broken link)

500 West Fullerton Studios (broken link)
530 West Arlington Studio (broken link)
WRIGLEYVILLE STUDIO WITH ALL UTILITIES INCLUDED! ONLY $595! (broken link)

Those are just places from the last day or so. Good locations.

Also, if gas isn't included, it can get expensive in the winter. Oh, just about these neighborhoods though, if you want off street parking it can be anywhere from $70 to $250/month.

6026 N. Winthrop- this is rogers park. You are pretty close to Loyola so there will be a lot of students, but can be a bit scetchy at times. I walk by myself here to visit friends but really don't like being at the el stop here by myself at night.
6161 N Winthrop- see above
6214 N Winthrop- see above
These are actually in Edgewater, so there's at least a little more buffer zone between these places and the Rogers Park knuckleheadery. Not that that's a perfect part of Edgewater but anyone with half a tolerance for urban conditions should be just fine there. Being 2 blocks from La Unica is definitely a bonus.

So, while we are playing the "is this address safe" game. What are the opinions on 5009 N Ravenswood? And, exactly what neighborhood is that in? Looks like it could be in several depending on which map you are looking at....

Thanks!

we have an appointment with apartment people on the last day we're there as a sort of "last resort" looking. we've heard some bad things about them and that's why we're considering them as a last resort. now that our apartment list has been cut in half, we're considering making an appointment with chicago apartment finders as well.

and thank you so much for the huge list of places! that's very helpful

5009 N. Ravenswood is technically in Uptown (right on the very western border of it), but pretty far away from the part of Uptown that often ends up in the news. There's a little sign about two blocks north of there that says "Welcome To South Andersonville Gardens" but I've never actually heard anyone acknowledge that there's any such thing as "South Andersonville Gardens." It's not quite Andersonville, but it's close enough to avail yourself of all the things Andersonville has to offer, and within reasonable walking distance to the Brown Line CTA station (when it re-opens anyway) and Ravenswood Metra station to boot. So bottom line... nice area.

I'm more or less around these every day, and haven't really found a problem yet.
