Hi,

Ok, my husband and I have finally made a decision and we are planning to move from London to Chicago next year (I have family there so it makes the initial moving process a whole lot easier than if we were to go to NY or SF for example). Anyway, I hope to carry on my work as a professional nanny and was wondering which are the wealthy areas where people will pay big bucks for a nanny? (the equivalent of working for a family in Manhattan!)

Thanks in advance for any info.

Anywhere on the North Side, and I do mean anywhere. Nannies are in high demand from the Gold Coast to Rogers Park, though the salaries are probably highest in Lincoln Park, Lakeview, the Gold Coast, Old Town, etc. Bucktown and Wicker Park have more nannies these days too. And of course, Lincoln Square, North Center, and Roscoe Village have become kid havens.

Also, anywhere in the North Shore suburbs, or in the Barringtons, Oak Park, River Forest, Hinsdale, LaGrange, Oak Brook, etc. would have high demand for nannies. I think salaries are highest in the city, however.

If the OP is intending to permenantly leave the UK and become a resident of the US their sponsor should have already filled out the I-864.
http://www.uscis.gov/files/form/I-864A.pdf (broken link)

The temporary employment categories are not available to "household help" which is the official Department of Labor classification of 'nannies'. This is a big problem and part of the larger "undocumented worker/illegal alien" mess.

Laugh all you want.

I am pretty damned sure that anybody that is contemplating hiring an nanny is going to be eager to fill out http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f2441.pdf
The child care tax credit is $3000 per child, max two kids -- it needs to social security number or EIN on it. This is the "carrot" side of IRS's efforts to get a handle on child care providers, essentially giving the people who hire them up to $6000.

There is also a "stick" if one hires "household help" and specifies all aspects of the work they do: 2005 Publications
That is a one reason that many people rely on any agency to verify employment status and handle taxes.

EDIT: Looks like OP is up the green card thing: //www.city-data.com/forum/3119535-post3.html
