This thread is intended as a tribute to great bars / restaurants / retail that are permanently closing in Chicago due to covid (not to delve into the covid arguments we've already argued at length on other threads). I just learned that one of my old favorites Southport Lanes is closing for good after 100 years. I bought my first condo down the block from here and would frequent it many times for the pool and bowling. Amazing how many cool facts and history there are about this bar...brothel, speakeasy, tied house, oldest bowling alleys, etc:

Feel free to post about a favorite old bar/ restaurant / shop closing due to the crisis. I hope many can hang on or reopen soon. And remember how important it is to support them during these times.

A couple places I loved, but not 100% sure if it was Covid (help me out if you DO know) are Shelly's on Lincoln Avenue as well as Armand's in Edison Park.... I'm guessing it was Covid. Both places have signs saying a new place is taking over but to date I have not seen any progress ;(

It was announced today (Sept 21) that Lawry's, The Prime Rib will be closing on Dec. 31 after 46 years of operation in Chicago.

This restaurant was a staple in the Chicago dining scene. l can remember dining there with my parents in the 1970s.

Lawry's CEO, Ryan Wilson, stated that the decision to close its Chicago restaurant was due to its expiring lease, coupled with revenue losses due to the corona virus. This location was Lawry's first expansion outside of the West Coast.

Mr. Wilson added that Lawry's would like to return to the Chicago market in the future.

Shelly's closed last year I think. They started remodeling it into a taco place I think last year but the progress seems to have stopped.

jsk1983, Hello!

My kids and I loved Shelly's. We always went there when we came down. And I was semi excited to see it become a taco place. Welllll, they PAINTED the place at least!

And Armand's will probably open up. I see it is going to be a Brother's Pizza, or something like that.

Rainforest Cafe is out of River North, though this has been talked about for years even before COVID.

Sadly yes. We had to reserve a new spot for our New Years bash this year. Kidding haha. Not really going to miss that place. Must be prime real estate for whoever owns that land/building for a high rise. That and hard rock cafe next door. I saw today the BP gas station is gone on 631 N LaSalle and Ontario and construction has begun. Anyone know what's going in there? Or are they simply updating that station cause the structure is still there?

We still have Rain Forest Cafe in Gurnee Mall.... I miss the old Solid Gold McDonald's that was across the street, downtown.

I feel like alot more restaurants should be going out of business. How do they stay open with limited seating and all? Also, what happened to all the food trucks?
