What are your opinions on making EGP & WGP a healthier are in the city. Possibly pushing to get better and more groceries stores and restaurant's. There is so much potential we just need to push for it. I want to believe it has already began to evolve when looking at the crime from 10 years ago vs today. (2021)

West Garfield is extremely dangerous and I would never live or invest there. East Garfield is on the upswing but is still a long way away from filling in all the vacant lots. It will be decades before the march west spills over to West Garfield.

A few years ago I was on business and stayed at a hotel in Oak Park and I had taken my bike on the plane with me with intent to ride. I had heard the West side was a bit sketchy but I got bored and cycled from the hotel in almost a straight route to downtown and back. Only once was I scared and another time I stopped for a break and an older man walked up and we started talking, he was a very cool person. Going as fast as I was I think I surprised some people and it was more quiet than I had imagined. I think I would have been more scared in a car than on the bicycle!

It was reported in the Sun-Times a few years ago that the epicenter of violent crime on the west side is the intersection of Adams St. (200S) and Pulaski Rd. (4000W). This location is in the center of West Garfield Park.

There's potential in every town, city, state, country, etc. Doesn't mean they're going to improve without dramatic demographic and reinvestment changes.

West Garfield Park is pure hood, disinvested, drug, crime and single parent ridden, with constant gunfire, tensions, and antisocial types throughout, and is unbelievably unattractive to reside unless you embrace that scene or are a misguided "pioneer".

It, along with perhaps another dozen neighborhoods, are cancer, and the people who are housepoor or stuck there for a variety of reasons remain victims.

Avoid.

Maybe Bicycle Boy upthread can be the one to jumpstart it. Just think of all that easy up-side!

Whether it's Kujo7 or whoever, I don't care. They just need to get in there - to live. Visiting for one day and then saying you understand how good people in the 'hood are because you met one or two isn't going to change things.
