I have mostly lived in the south, so I find people here to be very cold and impersonal and sometimes downright rude.

I don't think people are overly friendly here. In the south when you pass people on the sidewalk many say hi or good morning and we don't do that much here.

Whenever I ride my bike past people, I'd say, "hi" or give a head nod. Although it is a fleeting moment, it seemed reciprocated.

This was my experience on Sunday, when I came down to the city.

I met up with a lady from Niles later in the day, and we hung out at various places. She commented how nice she thought it was that I was the visitor, but everywhere we went people were very talkative and outgoing with me.

You know what? Just take some time to TALK to people and be friendly! It's 99% reciprocated.

I used to work with people in the Milwaukee County Jail that would say how Chicagoans seemed NOT friendly..... FAR from the TRUTH I had to inform them.

Urban areas are very self-absorbed, culture is watered down.

Could you elaborate on how culture is watered down in urban areas?

Just my opinion, but because Chicago has so many people who aren't from here originally, I find that it's really hard to identify a specific Chicago culture.

That's one thing I miss about living in Missouri. Most everyone there was from MO originally and could tell you about all the cool and not-so-cool places in the state.

Most of the friends I've met here aren't originally from Chicago, so they can't tell you much about the way things used to be in the neighborhood and can't make good recommendations for "hole in the wall" places.

We borrow it from other cultures, wish they would open up the Maxwell St. market; I want some authentic Mexican.
As another example, there are Chinatowns in a number of US cities; now show me an Americantown anywhere outside the U.S. What culture does Chicago have that is uniquely Chicago?
The only one I can think of is blues music., perhaps you can add.

I'm trying to imagine everybody on Mich Ave or La Salle or Broadway saying Hi or Good Morning to everyone they pass. Would we ever get where we are intending to go? Or would we be hoarse by the time we got there?

Oh baloney. I see you like to bash Chicago.

Chicago has the culture of every extremely populous city-- it has the culture of EVERYWHERE on the planet. That's what makes Chicago so unique to the US, along with NYC and LA, number 1 and 2 in population in the US. You can find a restaurant for every kind of food the world over, and it's all authentic. I can go to a dinner party and the people are from Russia, Australia, India, Germany, and have, many times...
Find that in podunk.
